A Story !
An inspiring Story !
In June 2001, Anu got a call from a Pastor in Mumbai. He said, there was a lady in a desperate situation. The young lady had given birth to a little girl and had no place to go. She was giving domestic help for the Pastors family and had recieved shelter with the family since she was kicked out of her house by the Mother. As soon as they discovered that their young daughter was pregnant, the family could not eccept the shame, humiliation and dishonor it could bring to thier family. The young girl was brutaly beaten and humiliated by her father. So she left the town and found shelter with the Church Pastor In Mumbai. Since the Pastor had his own 3 children and financial constrains, they called us here in Pune. We were more than willing to provide any help possible and the couple came to Vanitashray the very next day with this destitute ,unwed mother. When I first saw Shanta( Mother), she was weak and could feel her deep pain through her eyes. She was carrying a little 10day old girl in her arms. Shradha(the child) was very weak and sick with high fever due to pneumonia. My heart just melted over this little angel-baby Shradha !!
Vanitashray became her new home for couple weeks, before we began the legal process for Baby Shradha.
When I received this little girl in my arms I immediately thought of my very close friends from YWAM. A beautiful couple who were also my mentors, and were seeking to adopt a child. Carmen and Rajan had been praying for this and as soon as I gave the news , they were both thrilled and very much excited. The Lord in His mercy proved Himself faithful in every details of the process that went on for two months. We were grateful for St. John's Home who helped greatly in all the legal matters.
I've personally witnessed the growth of this precious child, named Tryphena Grace, with all the love and care provided by this wonderful Godly Family.

There are many such children in need, who are waiting and longing to be in safe environments and homes. Without such they're exposed to many dangers and life threatening situations, specially girls. To make things worse the law keeps changing concerning adoption and makes it more complicated and challenging to see more children safe. Rather many die each day as victims of unjust and cruel hardships of life. Many young girls end up in Brothels and sold for a dollar or two, rs 50 to 70.
Vanitashray caters to the needs of such abandoned, destitute and orphan girls since 1999. Our heart desire is to see many children find a loving and caring home, as God desires.

Welcome at our Vanitashray website
Why a shelter for girls/women? What makes it necessary for Vanitashray to come into existence?
Historical background of the life of female child and women in India justifies the need for such a home. The traditional attitude towards women in general illustrates the need for special care of orphan and destitute girls. In India the situation of women is complex because women are divided not only by class but also by caste. Especially the dalit (down trodden) women, who constitute the major working force, are thrice alienated and oppressed on the basis of their class, caste, and gender.
Unwanted girls from the low caste families suffer much because of their poverty and low social image. Thus they become dependant on the mercy of others and become prone to exploitation. Many of them are forced into child labor and slavery. Some become prey in the hands of sexual abusers.
India’s ‘child flesh’ industry is considered the second largest in the world. With over700,000 victims trafficked throughout the world each year, and with India serving as a major trafficking hub. Because of economic constraints, rejection by family and relatives, their socio-religious status and caste status; nearly 200 minor girls in India are driven to enter the ‘child flesh’ trade everyday.
Female infanticide has increased in India in the past .In India, out of 12 million girls born every year, 25 percent do not reach the age of 15. At each age from 1 to 19 the mortality rate in females is higher when compared to male mortality.
There is a great need to protect our children from abuse because India’s population is young with 37% being below 15 yrs of age. These facts and figures are self explanatory in revealing a desperate need for a PLACE that would provide shelter to protect and care for these girls who would otherwise become victims of this reality.
Vanitashray is committed to this vision, to rescue these girls from early death, injustice, oppression, sexual abuse, harassment, cruelty, poverty, rejection, hatred, humiliation, ridicule, and dehumanization. To give them acceptance, love , care, dignity, self-respect, honor, hope, and make them feel valuable and human.

A hundred years from now
it will not matter what
my bank account was,
the sort of house I lived in,
or the kind of car I drove.
But the world may be different
because I was important
in the Life of a child
